DALLAS (November 30, 2010) – Just last night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a new resolution that will designate September 26 as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. This new designation will commence in September 2011. The bill, which was in the works for more than a year, was introduced by Representative Betty McCollum of Minnesota. Mesothelioma attorneys at the national law firm of Baron & Budd, P.C., praised the creation of a designated day for mesothelioma awareness.
“Even today, many people think of asbestos as something from the past, but people continue to be diagnosed with asbestos cancers, such as mesothelioma. The creation of Mesothelioma Awareness Day is a step forward in the campaign to raise national awareness for mesothelioma,” said Baron & Budd shareholder. “Hopefully, this will help promote additional progress for mesothelioma awareness. Today, this asbestos cancer is not curable. With heightened awareness, we hope that additional research focus and funds can be applied to lead to a cure for this occupational cancer. Additionally, we hope the heightened awareness will lead to a worldwide cessation of the use of asbestos. Surprisingly, there is still a substantial industry push to keep using asbestos for various industrial applications.”
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the lining of the lung caused by asbestos exposure. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2009 there were more than 90,000 deaths directly linked to asbestos exposure worldwide. To learn more about mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers, visit here.
