DALLAS — (February 7, 2014) — Treatment alone won’t win the war on cancer — an increased focus on prevention will be just as important in stemming this growing global crisis. That is the finding of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which released the World Cancer Report 2014 on Feb. 3. The mesothelioma law firm of Baron and Budd wholeheartedly supports the work the IARC conducted in producing this report.
The IARC is a specialized cancer agency operating under the World Health Organization (WHO). The report, compiled by more than 250 leading scientists working across the globe, highlights the alarming growth of cancer, citing statistics and trends regarding the incidence of the disease worldwide.
Several key aspects of the report focus on how treatment alone will not be sufficient. More emphasis must be placed on preventative measures. According to the report, lung cancer was not only the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer (1.8 million diagnoses in 2012), it was also the most fatal (1.6 million deaths). Certain types of lung cancer can be caused by exposure to asbestos, a known human carcinogen. Despite this, the dangerous material has only been banned in approximately 55 countries, and the U.S. is not one of them. Mesothelioma, which is the most lethal cancer caused by asbestos, is still diagnosed in thousands across the globe each year. By eliminating the use of asbestos, the number of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diagnoses could be greatly reduced.
“While it is unfortunate that we still have a need for a World Cancer Report, we appreciate the attention that is being given to this terrible problem,” said Russell Budd, managing director of mesothelioma law firm Baron & Budd. “It is critical that we recognize the increased need for emphasis on prevention, and banning asbestos completely would be a crucial step in that direction.”
The report points out the importance of treatment, but states the more effective and affordable way to combat this global crisis is prevention. One of the most important means of prevention, the report states, is increased governmental efforts to educate the public on the various risk factors for various forms of cancer. These efforts will be essential to reducing the incidence of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases and the suffering they cause.
