Revlon Faces Lawsuit for Asbestos-Contaminated Talc Products

Revlon joins the list of companies now facing lawsuits due to asbestos-contaminated talc products. A woman and her husband filed the lawsuit against Revlon in a New York state court. The plaintiff claims she developed mesothelioma after using Revlon’s asbestos-contaminated talcum powder products.

The plaintiff’s father was employed with Revlon in New York and often brought home talcum powder products from the company for the plaintiff to use. In the suit the plaintiff says she used Revlon’s Jean Nate talcum powder and other Revlon talc products. The plaintiff was diagnosed with mesothelioma in January 2020.

The lawsuit also names chemical distributor Whittaker Clark & Daniels Inc. The suit alleges that the company failed to warn consumers about the dangers of asbestos despite having knowledge since the 1930s of the hazards of asbestos. This is not the first time Whittaker Clark & Daniels has been named in a lawsuit related to asbestos-contaminated talc. In 2016, the company paid $18 million to a plaintiff who claimed he developed mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos in several men’s talcum powder products.

The plaintiff in the Revlon lawsuit is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages and $40 million in punitive damages. Her husband is also seeking $5 million for mental anguish and loss of companionship.

Much of the litigation surrounding asbestos-contaminated talc products has focused on Johnson & Johnson. The company’s baby powder was recently tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Results from the test found asbestos in a bottle of Johnson & Johnson baby powder. The company has faced thousands of lawsuits related to its talcum powder products. Recently, Johnson & Johnson settled a lawsuit with a 62-year-old man who was diagnosed with mesothelioma after he alleged asbestos in the company’s baby powder led him to develop the disease. Johnson & Johnson settled the case right before the trial was set to start.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed in courts across the country alleging asbestos-contaminated talc products have led to the development of mesothelioma and other types of cancer.
