Mesothelioma Pain: How Painful is Mesothelioma Cancer?

August 31, 2016  |  Mesothelioma

It’s an unfortunate fact that mesothelioma pain is inevitable for someone diagnosed with this horrible disease. If a loved one is diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may think you will be unable to do anything to help relieve his or her discomfort. However, you are not as powerless as you may think you are.

How Mesothelioma Pain Occurs

You may think that “pain is pain” when it comes to mesothelioma, but there are actually different types of discomfort a patient will typically experience. These include the following:

  • Aching
  • Burning
  • Dull pain
  • Sharp pain
  • Throbbing pain
  • Tingling

Not everyone will experience the same type of discomfort, and not everyone will respond in the same way to medication. If you accompany a loved one to the doctor’s office, make sure he or she specifies the type of pain that is occurring so medications can be adjusted if necessary.

There are several reasons why mesothelioma pain occurs, such as:

  • The tumor is applying pressure to organs and/or nerves
  • Chemotherapy, radiation or surgical treatments
  • The cancer itself

What You Can Do to Help

If you are caring for a loved one dealing with mesothelioma pain, the most important thing you can do is to make sure the two of you effectively communicate when it comes to the pain level that is occurring. Again, this will be vital to helping the doctor determine the right type of medication to prescribe.

Keep a daily journal of the amount of pain that is being experienced on a scale of 0-10, with zero, of course, being no pain and 10 being severe discomfort. Ask your loved one to provide his or her pain level three or four times a day and jot down the number. That way, your doctor will have a clear picture of not only the severity of the mesothelioma pain, but also how it fluctuates.

There is only one known cause of mesothelioma, and that is exposure to asbestos. If a loved one has been diagnosed with this disease, you may be able to take legal action to hold accountable the asbestos companies responsible.
