READ MOREThe current pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus known as Covid-19 could not have come at a worse time for those suffering from mesothelioma cancer. Known as an aggressive cancer which develops in the lining of the lung and other organs, mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a fibrous mineral that was added to countless household products and building materials from the early 1900s to the late 1970s.
Exposure to asbestos can cause scarring in the lungs, eventually leading to severe shortness of breath, chest pain, lung constriction, respiratory failure and, in some cases, lung cancer and mesothelioma cancer. Because the latency period for asbestos disease is so long, at twenty to forty years or more, patients typically don’t begin to develop symptoms until many years after they were exposed. This means symptoms of lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos usually don’t show up until around the age of retirement, when people’s bodies are not as well-equipped to withstand the debilitating symptoms of cancer or the harsh side effects of treatment.
Covid-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019”, is a virus that can cause serious flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough and shortness of breath. Its official name, “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2” (SARS-CoV-2), indicates how treacherous the virus can be for those whose lung function is already decreased by underlying illness. This is especially true for those suffering from asbestos-related lung cancer or mesothelioma.
Children who contract Covid-19 appear to be at low risk of severe disease and death from the coronavirus. However, people who are elderly and those who smoke or have existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, severe obesity, chronic kidney or liver disease, or who have compromised immune systems, are at higher risk of developing serious complications like pneumonia, which can be deadly even in those without a devastating cancer like mesothelioma.
If you or a loved one has been given a diagnosis of mesothelioma and you want to take legal action against the asbestos manufacturers responsible for your suffering, the dedicated lawyers at Baron & Budd want you to know that we are here and available to help you, even in this time of social distancing and increased anxiety for all. As we strive to hold our own families close, so too, do we continue to compassionately care for our clients at every step of their journey through living with mesothelioma.
No matter what state you live in, there is a time limit within which you must file a lawsuit if you wish to obtain compensation after receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis. If you don’t file suit within that time period, your opportunity to seek damages for the harm caused to you by asbestos manufacturers is lost forever. This is known as the Statute of Limitations. If you‘d like more information about your legal options, you can contact the attorneys at Baron & Budd for a free and completely confidential evaluation without leaving your home or hospital room.
In this time of great uncertainty and heightened stress over what the future may hold, please be reassured that our firm is open for business and ready to answer your questions and assist you with your mesothelioma lawsuit. Please contact Baron & Budd online or call 855-280-7664 to learn more.
