Mesothelioma Care 101: The Basics to Making Each Day Just a Little Smoother

April 25, 2013  |  Mesothelioma

A mesothelioma diagnosis can shake you and your family to the core and make you feel completely unprepared for what’s to come. There are many elements to consider when preparing to take on mesothelioma treatment and it can seem like a daunting endeavor to even the most capable.  But even as you worry about the major decisions that need to be made, it is often the little things that can place you and your family more at ease.

Here are a few little tips that can make a big difference.

  • Take out the guesswork – Sometimes, it is the little things that make those difficult days seem to flow just a little smoother. If your loved one is about to begin chemotherapy as part of their mesothelioma treatment, a pillbox can sometimes be your best friend.  Take some time and separate your loved one’s chemo drug regimen so there is no question as to when or what pills need to be taken.
  • Ice cream makes everything better – When a mesothelioma patient goes through chemotherapy, their mouth will often develop sores from the aggressive medication. A pill crusher can make all the difference, as the medication will go down much smoother when combined with applesauce or frozen yogurt, or ice cream. Who doesn’t like ice cream?
  • Who can remember everything? – When you are dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis, you can often feel bombarded by an overload of medical information. It makes sense while in the doctor’s office, but what happens when you get home and start to forget? A notebook is the easiest way to avoid this. Simply bring the same notebook with you to each doctor’s meeting and write down the answers your doctor gives to the important questions you have to ask. Pretty soon, you will have created your own source of knowledge that you can go back to when you start to lose track
  • Make it a movie night – It is easy to slip into a constant state of worry, panic and grief when your loved one is first diagnosed. The best mesothelioma care is crucial to the health and the well being of your entire family. This also includes your mental health.  Make sure and find some time to laugh. Watch a funny movie or your favorite T.V. show together and “check out” for an hour or two each day.  Laughter is always the best medicine, no matter what the disease.
