Mesothelioma Law Firm Advocates for U.S. Asbestos Ban, More Public Knowledge About Mesothelioma, Asbestos Cancers

LOS ANGELES –September 26, 2013 – First organized in 2004, Mesothelioma Awareness Day was created to honor patients whose lives were cut short by mesothelioma and to raise awareness about this horrible cancer. Baron and Budd, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of people who have suffered from mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases, is working to raise awareness today about the dangers of asbestos exposure, advocate for a ban on asbestos and remind the public that mesothelioma continues to affect people today.

Mesothelioma is a rare, but deadly, cancer that is diagnosed in approximately 3,000 Americans each year. Because this cancer is difficult to detect, it is often not diagnosed until the later stages when treatment options are more limited, and survival rates tend to be low. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a known human carcinogen that is still used in the United States today, even though it has been banned by approximately 55 countries across the globe, including the European Union.

“We would prefer that Mesothelioma Awareness Day was not needed, but since many people have never heard of mesothelioma and mistakenly think that asbestos is a thing of the past, this day is essential,” said Russell Budd, managing director of Baron and Budd. “Asbestos has not been banned in the United States, and as long as our country continues to import and use asbestos, people will continue to be diagnosed with asbestos diseases, like mesothelioma. On this year’s Mesothelioma Awareness Day, we are calling for more awareness about this important issue and hope to raise awareness about the need to ban asbestos.”

Baron and Budd has been helping patients and families suffering from mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases for more than 35 years. A cornerstone practice area for the firm, Baron and Budd was one of the first law firms to step up on behalf of asbestos patients and help them fight back against the asbestos companies. The firm is known for its commitment to helping patients both in and out of the courtroom. Baron & Budd is a repeat platinum-level sponsor of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an independent non-profit organization dedicated to giving asbestos victims a unified voice in the battle against asbestos. ADAO works to ban asbestos, raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos, educate the public about asbestos and advocate for a ban in Washington on behalf of patients and families.

The firm is also the sole sponsor of the book Understanding Mesothelioma from CURE media group, a comprehensive guide to mesothelioma treatment options, causes and legal options for patients. The book was updated in 2013 and is available to patients and caregivers free of charge.
