In Loving Memory of Janelle Bedel, a True Wonder Woman

June 20, 2013  |  Mesothelioma

Baron and Budd would like to pay tribute to a true hero, Janelle Bedel, who passed away after her courageous fight with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The Rushmore, Indiana wife and mother was a true force of nature and left her mark on the mesothelioma community and everyone else whom she touched.

During a six-year battle with the mesothelioma, Janelle made a huge impact in the world of asbestos disease. Early on in her diagnosis, she happened upon a Wonder Woman t-shirt in a local thrift store, and soon after began to embody the super hero’s spirit. Through her hardships, Janelle embraced her role as an advocate for mesothelioma patients across the globe.

“Even though this disease is awful, I feel it was my purpose in life…to be able to reach out and touch and change people’s lives,” said Janelle. “I believe that with prayer and with God anything is possible and that one person can make a difference.”

In a valiant effort to raise awareness for mesothelioma patients around the country, Janelle organized a Miles for Meso fundraiser in her town of Rushville, Indiana. In fact, Janelle inspired so much support in her community that the mayor of Rushville officially recognized June 6th as Janelle Bedele “Wonder Woman” Day as well as September 26th as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day.

On June 18th, while Janelle rested in hospice care, she was awarded the Alan Reinstein Award by Linda Reinstein, CEO and co-founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO). The Alan Reinstein Award, named after the late husband of Linda and first ADAO President, is one of the highest honors that ADAO presents.

Just like any super hero, Janelle’s legacy will continue to live on long after her passing and will continue to inspire others to fight for what you believe in. She has certainly inspired all of the people at Baron and Budd.
