How is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?

A mesothelioma diagnosis occurs in many different ways, and through the use of many different tools. There are also many instances where the disease is misdiagnosed, because its symptoms often mimic those of far less serious illnesses.

Symptoms

Before someone receives a mesothelioma diagnosis, of course, he or she will first have to show symptoms of the disease. These symptoms, which can take anywhere from 20 to even 50 years or more after asbestos exposure occurs, include:

• Fever
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest or abdominal pain
• Muscle weakness
• Wheezing or dry cough

If these symptoms persist or worsen, you should first see your family doctor to rule out a respiratory illness. If your doctor believes there is a chance you could have mesothelioma, he or she will refer you to a specialist such as an oncologist.

Tests

The specialist will recommend several types of tests in order to obtain a mesothelioma diagnosis. These include imaging tests such as MRIs, CT scans and X-rays. It will be extremely important that you are straightforward regarding any asbestos exposure you may have suffered, whether it was on the job or at home.

Biopsies and blood tests are also used to help a doctor determine a mesothelioma diagnosis. Biopsies are performed in a number of different ways in order to obtain a tissue sample to send to a laboratory for examination. Blood tests are increasing in acceptance in regard to testing for mesothelioma, but they are not advanced to the point to where they are able to independently confirm a diagnosis.
