Researchers Show that Acetic Acid Could Possibly Be a Feasible Treatment
DALLAS (Jan. 30, 2015) – A team of Japanese researchers recently published a study showing that the application of acetic acid – an ingredient found in common, household vinegar – may be effective in killing mesothelioma cells, reports the mesothelioma law firm of Baron and Budd. The results of the research team’s work were published in the December 2014 issue of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
The researchers, according to the study, came to their conclusion after they added acetic acid to a Petri dish that contained two cell lines of mesothelioma that had been taken from human patients. They tested several concentrations of the acid, making observations as to how the cells responded. An acid concentration of .5 percent killed nearly all cancer cells after they were exposed for 10 minutes, although the researchers were unclear why the acid induced the death of the cells.
The authors of the study indicate that acetic acid – either used on its own or in conjunction with chemotherapy – could potentially be an effective treatment for mesothelioma as well as peritoneal cancer (which attacks the abdominal lining) and stomach cancer. However, they also stressed that there is no proof that drinking vinegar will help either fight cancer or prevent it. Doing so could actually be extremely hazardous to health, as many deaths and injuries have been reported.
Further research will be necessary to determine whether acetic acid can improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs without causing major complications.
