LOS ANGELES (October 4, 2011) –Merlin Olsen, known around the world for his 15-year career with the Los Angeles Rams and his post-football career as an actor on "Little House on the Prairie," died in 2010 as a result of mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs caused only by exposure to asbestos. The national mesothelioma law firm of Baron & Budd, P.C. represented Olsen’s family in a lawsuit against 11 companies that manufactured products leading to Olsen’s asbestos exposure and untimely death.
The lawsuit concluded in an out-of-court, confidential settlement.
"The death of Merlin Olsen, a world-class athlete and embodiment of healthy living, is emblematic of the tragedy of asbestos cancers," said mesothelioma attorneys at Baron & Budd. "Scientists were predicting today’s cancers fifty years ago, but because some of the asbestos companies continued to push asbestos into the market, we see an estimated 10,000 deaths a year in this country alone from asbestos-related diseases today."
Merlin Olsen was a football legend and beloved actor who enjoyed a successful football and acting career in the 1960s and 1970s. Regarded as one of the best defensive tackles in the history of football, Olsen enjoyed a long career with the Los Angeles Rams and was elected to the Pro Bowl 14 times. He was also later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Fall of Fame. After his NFL career, Olsen developed a successful career as a broadcaster and television actor, appearing on "Little House on the Prairie."
The case was filed in Los Angeles, California.
