Applicants were asked to submit a written or video essay about how cancer has impacted their lives. Sieradski’s winning written essay was selected after a competitive review by the Baron & Budd Scholarship committee. His essay detailed how he battled a rare and aggressive cancer called Burkitt’s lymphoma when he was only 15 years old. Sieradski’s astounding account of his fight against cancer was lighthearted and extremely optimistic. He explains how he stayed strong and positive from the moment he received his diagnosis in order to win the upcoming fight.

“There is no time to feel sorry for myself. It’s time to step up; time to fight the battle. I fight hard, not only because it is my only option, but also because I believe to my core that my attitude will dictate the results,” Sieradski wrote in his winning essay.

Sieradski used his experience as a way to help other children and teenagers struggling with cancer. He speaks to panels of doctors and nurses about caring for pediatric cancer patients and he volunteers at the Children’s Hospital. Sieradski will be attending the University of Alabama where he will be majoring in mechanical engineering.

Additionally, Amritpal Kaur was selected by the Baron & Budd Scholarship committee as the video essay winner. Her video focused on her grandfather’s cancer diagnosis and how it affected her family. Kaur was surprised by the way cancer found a way to bring happiness to her family during a time that started out with a lot of sadness. She explains how her grandfather strengthened his relationships with several family members before he passed away and how her family found a way to make the best out of a hard time in their life, leaving them with fond memories.

In a letter of recommendation, one of Kaur’s teachers said, “when it comes to her human kindness, I have seen how she is willing to help others during times of trouble, including consoling friends during times of grief and assisting as a confidant.”

Kaur is attending California State University Bakersfield where she is majoring in biochemistry. She hopes to become a pediatric dentist once she finishes college.

“Both Trey and Amritpal chose to focus on the positive and use their experiences to help others. These qualities helped lead the scholarship committee to make their decision. The wisdom they have already exhibited in dealing with adversity will ensure their success in life,” said President and Managing Shareholder Russell Budd.

The Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the thousands of Americans who are diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer every year.
