DALLAS (January 17, 2012) –The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) will be honoring the late actor Steve McQueen with the Warren Zevon “Keep Me in Your Heart” Memorial Tribute Award. Though McQueen is known as a legend of the silver screen, he passed away in 1980 from mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The Warren Zevon Memorial Tribute Award will be presented March 31, 2012 at ADAO’s 8th Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Mr. McQueen’s widow, Barbara McQueen, will be accepting the award on his behalf.
“Most people don’t realize that Steve McQueen, one of the greatest icons of American culture, died of mesothelioma,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of Baron and Budd. “This horrible cancer can strike anyone and it doesn’t discriminate. We’re glad to support ADAO as they honor an American legend like Steve McQueen for his battle against mesothelioma. We hope that this will help raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure.”
Steve McQueen was an American legend known for his extraordinary life on and off the screen in the 1960s and 1970s. Nicknamed “The King of Cool,” McQueen was a symbol of freedom, fighting for what you believe in, and the ultimate bad boy. At the height of his career, McQueen was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, but his life was cut short at the age of 50 by mesothelioma.
The 8th Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference will be March 30-April 1, 2012 in Los Angeles. Titled “Asbestos: An International Public Health Crisis,” the conference will bring together world-renowned medical experts, asbestos victims, families, and other advocates to increase public awareness of asbestos issues, discuss the latest in treatments, and advocate for an international ban on asbestos.
