Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) Remains A Driving Force Behind Efforts to Ban Asbestos Use

DALLAS –(January 28, 2014) -For the 10th consecutive year, the first week of April will be designated as National Asbestos Awareness Week, thanks to a resolution passed by the U.S. Senate. Senator Max Baucus led the effort to pass Senate Resolution 336 on January 16, 2014, to raise the public awareness concerning both the dangers of exposure to asbestos and the prevalence of diseases related to asbestos exposure. National mesothelioma law firm Baron & Budd applauds the resolution and appreciates the work of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), the driving force behind the effort to establish the resolution.

ADAO is the largest independent, non-profit organization devoted to taking a stand on behalf of patients and their families affected by asbestos diseases. The organization continues to fight for a ban on asbestos use in an effort to eliminate mesothelioma and other diseases related to asbestos exposure. Even though the dangers of asbestos have been widely known for decades, it is still being imported and used in the United States.

“Asbestos continues to be used, not just in the U.S. but across the world, despite the fact it is a carcinogen that can lead to devastating consequences,” said Russell Budd, managing director of national mesothelioma law firm Baron & Budd. “We appreciate both the U.S. Senate and ADAO for their work on behalf of patients suffering from asbestos-related diseases.”

Asbestos has been linked to a wide range of diseases, including asbestos lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. Asbestos is responsible for more than 107,000 deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. Despite this fact, approximately 1,600 metric tons of asbestos was imported into the U.S. in 2012, according to the United Stated Geological Survey (USGS). That equates to more than 2.3 million pounds. The USGS stated that 41 percent of imported asbestos was used in roofing products, with the rest used in “unknown applications.”
