June 30, 2008  |  Press Releases

On June 14, 2008, a county deputy and a volunteer firefighter were struck head-on and killed by a tractor trailer as they stood outside their vehicles while responding to an accident call. The truck driver had slowed down because visibility was impaired by fog and smoke from a nearby range fire, but troopers believed that he had not slowed down enough for the conditions on the road. Because troopers concluded that the accident, which occurred at 5:00 am last Saturday morning, was avoidable, the driver of the 18 wheeler has been charged with exceeding a safe speed and two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle. The county sheriff said that several vehicles were involved in three different accidents that early morning.
