Chicago advertising agency resolves False Claims Act suit for overbilling Army

One of Chicago’s best known advertising agencies, Leo Burnett, has agreed to pay the United States a huge amount to resolve a whistleblower suit filed more than four years ago under the federal False Claims Act in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The government alleged that the ad agency presented the Army with false billing claims for work performed on the Army’s ad account from 2000 through 2005. Greg Hamilton, a former Burnett vice president, and Michelle Casey, a former comptroller with the agency, were the two whistleblowers who initially filed the suit. Under the Qui Tam provisions of the False Claims Act, they will each receive a sizable portion of the Army’s recovery.
