A Tennessee citizen watchdog has filed suit in Knox County alleging that the general counsel of the county’s Retirement & Pension Board had overcharged and overbilled the county by a considerable amount. According to the lawsuit, the board’s lawyer overcharged for time allegedly spent on legal services above and beyond his duties of general counsel. In addition, the suit charges that the board’s lawyer billed the retirement board for services concerning lawsuits to which the board was not a party. The suit seeks to recover funds for the county and to remove the defendant as the retirement board’s general counsel. The lawsuit also includes one claim under the Tennessee False Claims Act, which claim was filed under seal, as required under the Act.
