READ MOREDALLAS –(March 8, 2012) –For the eighth consecutive year, the U.S. Senate has passed a resolution to designate the first week of April as National Asbestos Awareness Week. The goal of the resolution is to "raise public awareness about the prevalence of asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos exposure." As a law firm that works closely with mesothelioma patients and their families, Baron and Budd is proud to support this resolution. It has been passed every year since 2005.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), a nonprofit organization dedicated to an international asbestos ban, was a driving force behind the passage of this resolution.
"Though there has been some progress in raising asbestos awareness, a lot more work still needs to be done," said mesothelioma attorney at Baron and Budd. "Despite popular belief, asbestos is still not banned in the U.S. even though it is responsible for thousands of deaths every year. The public needs to know that this is still a serious health issue that affects their lives today."
Asbestos is a known human carcinogen that can cause a variety of diseases, including certain types of lung cancer and mesothelioma, a deadly cancer of the lining of the lung. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), asbestos is responsible for more than 107,000 deaths each year.
Baron and Budd is a 2012 platinum sponsor of ADAO.
ADAO’s Eighth Annual Asbestos Awareness Conference will be March 30-April 1 in Los Angeles.
