DALLAS (May 15, 2015) – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommends that operators of heavy truck and bus fleets use video technology to monitor drivers, the national law firm of Baron & Budd reports. The recommendation was issued on April 29, according to Transport Topics, a publication that covers the trucking industry.
The publication reported that the NTSB issued a safety alert recommending video technology that can help not only reduce dangerous driving behavior, but can also help provide information in post-crash investigations. According to the publication, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute recently tested a video system known as DriveCam. The Institute examined more than 10,000 crashes involving buses and heavy trucks and found that a combination of the DriveCam system and driver behavior modification helped reduce injury-causing accidents by 35 percent and reduced fatal accidents by 20 percent.
The NTSB, according to the publication, recommends that the American Trucking Association encourage members to make sure the video systems they use not only provide visibility of the driver, but also each occupant. It also recommends systems have the ability to record in low light and also provide visibility in front of the vehicle.
“We wholeheartedly support the efforts of the NTSB to increase the use of video systems in large trucks and buses,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of the national law firm of Baron & Budd. “Anything that can reduce the number of tragedies that occur on our roads each year will be enthusiastically welcomed.”
