Summy Honored as Part of University’s 2016 President’s Legacy Awards Presentation
DALLAS (February 16, 2016) – Baron & Budd attorney Scott Summy received the Civility with Integrity Award from his alma mater, Tarleton State University, during the school’s 2016 Legacy Awards ceremony on February 13. Summy, a 1986 Tarleton State graduate, was recognized for “significant contributions to the betterment of society through character, forthrightness, honorable actions and commitment to the well-being of others,” according to a school announcement.
Summy, a Baron & Budd shareholder, heads the firm’s Environmental Litigation Group, which represents public entities in an effort to recover the costs of cleaning up public water supplies, public property, governmental facilities and natural resources due to chemical contamination. The Group works to shift the cost of remediation from taxpayers and public entities to the chemical suppliers and manufacturers responsible for the contamination.
Summy has earned national recognition for his work in representing public entities and citizens. He served on the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee overseeing litigation involving the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, and his work regarding the gasoline additive MTBE earned Summy and his team the Attorneys of the Year award from California Lawyer in 2001.
Under Summy’s direction, the firm has represented in excess of 200 public entities whose water was contaminated with MTBE and has recovered over a billion dollars for these clients to assist them in serving clean water.
In addition, Summy and the Environmental Litigation Group represented all U.S. water providers in a case against Syngenta, the manufacturer of the chemical atrazine. Summy and his team took action against Syngenta for drinking water contamination and negotiated a $105 million settlement on behalf of more than 2,000 water providers.
