Mesothelioma Cancer Victims’ Memorial Scholarship Winner!
Camryn is the winner of the firm’s $2,500 Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship. Highsmith’s winning essay, which was selected after a competitive review by the Baron & Budd Scholarship committee, detailed the toll cancer has had on many important women in her life and also highlighted the impressive steps she has taken throughout her high school career to research breast cancer.
After Southampton High school discontinued its Science Research Program, Highsmith pursued an independent study program through Stony Brook Southampton Hospital to continue her research, which focused on the review and results of the differences in race and age in the prognosis of triple negative breast cancer. Highsmith’s research was recently featured at the 34th Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference, where she became the first high school student to both attend and present.
“The struggles of the countless women in my life … and their early deaths became my motivation. They helped make my research more than just another project; it drove me to want to help find a cure to the disease that took countless “Wonder Women” from this world so early,” Highsmith wrote in her winning essay.
Additionally, Highsmith formed a new high school student group, C.A.A.S.H. (Cancer Awareness Advocates of Southampton), to drive greater awareness of cancer and cancer prevention. Highsmith also and earned a New York State EMT-B certification in basic life support and volunteers with Village of Southampton Volunteer Ambulance. In addition to pursuing healthcare interests, she was a member of the National Honor Society; co-President of the Spanish Honor Society; and the co-captain of the girls lacrosse team, where was a four-year starter. Highsmith will attend Villanova University in the fall, where she plans to major in biology. After completing her undergraduate degree, Highsmith plans to study to become an oncologist.
