First Earth Day Considered by Many as the Start of the Modern Environmental Movement

DALLAS (April 22, 2015) – The national law firm of Baron & Budd proudly commemorates the 46th annual Earth Day on April 22. Started in 1970, Earth Day is seen by many as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Millions of Americans are expected to mark the occasion by showing their support for the protection of the environment.

Earth Day began as an effort to heighten awareness among the public of air and water pollution, and has since grown to include organized events in more than 100 countries around the world. The national law firm of Baron & Budd has been committed to protecting the environment for nearly 40 years, working in several areas such as water contamination, the Gulf oil spill and PCB contamination.

Baron & Budd has represented businesses, entities and people who have been harmed by water contamination caused by corporate negligence. The firm’s history in this area stretches back more than 20 years, to when Baron & Budd attorneys represented the city of Tucson, AZ in a water contamination case. This case resulted in a settlement for the city that secured the funds necessary to clean up the water supply.

The firm’s Environmental Litigation Group has been at the forefront of many difficult issues, such as the BP Gulf oil spill that occurred in 2010. Baron & Budd has represented hundreds of public entities, individuals and businesses that suffered harm due to the spill. Scott Summy, a Baron & Budd shareholder and environmental lawyer, is a member of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee guiding litigation against BP and other companies that played a role in causing the disaster.

In addition, the national law firm of Baron & Budd was one of the first firms in the country to represent schools regarding contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. This is a group of chemical compounds manufactured by Monsanto and used in the construction of schools and commercial buildings between 1950-1980. PCBs have been linked to cancer and other severe health issues.

“We are proud to recognize Earth Day, which has been instrumental in raising awareness about a wide range of environmental issues,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of the national law firm of Baron and Budd. “Our firm will continue to fight for the environment, and make sure those that damage it are held accountable for their actions.”
