The website of a San Antonio television station recently published a timeline of commercial bus accidents that have occurred in Texas since 2005. It was spurred by the latest incident, which claimed the lives of 13 people in Uvalde, TX in March 2017. This is a reminder of just how dangerous traveling by commercial bus can be.
A Tragic Roll Call
Here is a list of just some of the fatal bus accidents that have occurred within the state of Texas since 2005.
- September 2005 – Hurricane Rita evacuees from a Houston nursing home were involved in a bus accident outside of Dallas – 23 fatalities occurred. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruled that the probable cause was a fire due to an overheated rear axle. The reason the axle overheated, according to the agency, was insufficient lubrication. The families of the deceased won an $80 million settlement in a lawsuit against the bus manufacturer and the charter bus company.
- August 2008 – A group of 55 Vietnamese Catholics were on their way to Missouri when their bus veered off a highway near Sherman. The National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) determined that the probable cause was a blown tire. The Bureau reported that the tire had apparently been illegally retreaded.
- January 2015 – Ten people were killed when a prison bus slid off of an icy highway near Odessa and slid down an embankment. The bus was then hit by a freight train. According to the NTSB, a broken guardrail was to blame. A previous accident had knocked a guardrail into a lane on the highway.
These just scratch the surface of the bus accidents that have killed dozens of people over the past few years and severely injured dozens more.
