You probably had an idea that being a truck driver was a dangerous job, but you might not know that it is, in fact, one of the deadliest jobs in the United States. According to the Bureau of Statistics, a division of the U.S. Labor Department, nearly 750 truckers died on the job in 2015. This accounts for more than 25 percent of all work-related deaths that occurred across the country that year.
A Disturbing Trend
In fact, fatalities among truckers actually increased from 2011-2015 by more than 10 percent. There are a lot of factors involved with this tragic rise. Online shopping has increased, leading to the need for faster deliveries, and trucks are relied upon more than ever to transport goods.
Another disturbing factor involves the way that truck drivers are paid. They often feel the need to push through to meet company-mandated deadlines when they should be taking rest breaks, putting themselves and others on the road at risk.
In addition, carriers often ignore government rules regarding the safety of their vehicles, ignoring, for example, mandates to make their rigs better able to withstand the impact of an accident. Incredibly, many commercial trucks aren’t even required to be outfitted with protective airbags.
Taking Aim at Those Responsible
In the vast majority of fatal trucking accidents, the blame lies with either the trucking company, the manufacturer of a defective part, or some combination of the two. Carriers often force drivers to work incredibly long shifts with little to no rest because of irresponsible deadlines. They also ignore regular maintenance on far too often a basis, putting their drivers – as well as other motorists – at substantial risk.
