The Babcock & Wilcox company was formed in 1867 and began producing boilers that earned them large governmental and municipal work contracts. Babcock & Wilcox boilers became the units of choice for governmental bodies and divisions of the military such as the U.S. Navy. Unfortunately, Babcock & Wilcox utilized asbestos as an insulating material in its boilers and designed them in such a manner that they required and were spec’d to use deadly asbestos.
Asbestos usage continued for decades until the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) imposed stricter asbestos regulations in the 1970’s. By that point, widespread use of asbestos in Babcock & Wilcox products had exposed countless numbers of people to the carcinogen. The company continued using asbestos-laden products in their boilers for decades even though they knew of the dangers associated with its usage.
The first lawsuit for asbestos exposure against Babcock & Wilcox was in 1982, but many other lawsuits were filed for mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos in their boilers quickly after. The resulting Babcock & Wilcox Asbestos Bankruptcy Trust Fund was formed in 2006 and funded with $1.85 billion to compensate victims suffering from an asbestos-related illness.
Some of the Nation’s Most Popular Boilers Contained Asbestos

- Pipefitters, insulators, millwrights, plumbers, operators and welders;
