READ MOREMunicipalities, counties, states and other governmental entities across the U.S. have had to absorb incredibly large expenses due to the ongoing opioid crisis. Tens of thousands of people have died, and millions more have had to be hospitalized due to opioid overdoses. Caring for overdose victims places an immense burden on governments, and they’re suing opioid manufacturers in order to recoup as many of those expenses as possible.
Here is a brief summary of where these cases stand, and the work Baron & Budd is performing on behalf of the clients it is representing in opioid lawsuits.
Hundreds of governmental entities across the country have filed lawsuits against companies that make opioids, companies that distribute them, and companies that sell them in pharmacies. These cases have been consolidated in order to help speed the litigation process, and are being heard by Judge Dan A. Polster of the Northern District of Ohio. Judge Polster has appointed three special masters to help him expedite the case.
Baron & Budd and its team of attorneys have taken approximately 30 of the depositions to date. They are also poring through more than 20 million documents produced by the defendants in the case. These documents account for more than 100 million pages that need to be reviewed.
Judge Polster is adamant that all parties come to a solution to stop this public health crisis sooner than later. Baron & Budd is working very hard to hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for this crisis. While continuing to work the case toward trial, we will also attempt to negotiate a resolution with the defendants to provide meaningful relief in your community.
