We have an epidemic in America. We have all seen it on the news. We may even know someone who has been personally impacted. Opioids, especially addictive prescription painkillers, have caused a wave of addiction that has wreaked havoc on countless of our communities.
A new article in the Washington Post shines a light on the crisis, specifically highlighting how some of the hardest hit cities, counties, and states are now considering legal action against the manufacturers and distributors of these drugs.
The lawsuits come as states and communities grapple with the economic impact of a prescription drug epidemic that has resulted in nearly 180,000 overdose deaths between 2000 and 2015 — more than three times the number of Americans who died during the Vietnam War. The epidemic has led to thousands more deaths from overdoses of heroin and fentanyl, which are becoming easier and cheaper to obtain than prescription drugs.
Baron & Budd is currently investigating “potential lawsuits related to allegations that pharmaceutical distributors deliberately failed to monitor and report suspicious orders of opioids, potentially playing a central role in creating an opioid addiction epidemic.”
