Asbestos Exposure in Ohio
Ohio’s large manufacturing industry makes it a location with a high risk of asbestos exposure. The heat of pipes and equipment involved in manufacturing and production require insulation and fireproofing. These insulation materials were typically made with asbestos.
Chemical plants, power plants, paper mills, refineries, and other factories used asbestos materials in their facilities exposing workers to the toxic fibers. Ohio was home to asbestos mining companies and several major manufacturing facilities that used asbestos in the development of their products.
Manufacturing and Asbestos Exposure
Manufacturers used asbestos because of its heat resistant properties. Workers who regularly handled asbestos-containing materials or those who worked in the area near asbestos materials may have inhaled asbestos fibers that were airborne due to industrial processes. Employees exposed to these toxic fibers may develop deadly asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Vermiculite and Asbestos
Several vermiculite-processing plants in Ohio received asbestos-contaminated vermiculite from Libby, Montana. The Scotts Company in Marysville, Ohio received and processed the most asbestos-contaminated vermiculite than any other location in the nation. When workers processed the mineral, asbestos fibers could become airborne creating hazardous conditions for the workers and others nearby.
Asbestos in Buildings
Many old buildings in Ohio were constructed with asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos was used in a variety of construction materials, such as insulation, flooring tiles, and roofing shingles. Construction workers and maintenance repair workers are at a high risk of asbestos exposure when repairing or demolishing these older facilities. Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of malignant cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. The most common forms of mesothelioma are: pleural and peritoneal. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the abdominal cavity.
Victims with pleural mesothelioma may have respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Victims with peritoneal mesothelioma may have abdominal swelling, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.
The latency period for mesothelioma is very long. The average latency period is about 30 years, but can be shorter than 15 years or longer than 40 years. This means individuals with mesothelioma may take decades to present symptoms from the time they were exposed to asbestos.
What is asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by asbestos exposure. When asbestos is inhaled the fibers irritate and scar the lining of the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. The lungs become stiff and cannot expand and contract normally. Symptoms of asbestosis are shortness of breath, chest pain, and a dry, persistent cough. Like mesothelioma, the latency period for asbestosis is very long. Symptoms may not present for 10 to 40 years after asbestos exposure.
Military Asbestos Exposure
