Asbestos Exposure in Alabama
Most asbestos exposure in Alabama occurs in work-related settings. Industrial and manufacturing companies in Alabama commonly used asbestos for its insulation properties. Prior to the 1980s, individuals who worked in trades, such as construction, were at a higher risk of exposure before asbestos was more strongly regulated. Workers in shipyards, power plants, mills, government buildings, manufacturing, construction, and members of the military were particularly at risk of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos in Shipbuilding
Alabama’s coastline made the state home to many large shipyards and shipbuilding companies. Asbestos was commonly used in shipbuilding because of its durability and heat resistance. Shipbuilders and shipyard workers are among the most high-risk professions for developing mesothelioma.
The Alabama Drydock & Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO) in Mobile is a location known for asbestos exposure that has resulted in disease and numerous lawsuits have been filed against the shipyard for asbestos exposure.
Manufacturing and Asbestos
Steel and factory workers across Alabama were exposed to asbestos. Manufacturing companies used asbestos in many processes because it is resistant to heat and many chemicals. Shook and Fletcher, a wholesale insulation distributor and contractor in Birmingham, used asbestos insulation from the 1940s through the 1970s. The company declared bankruptcy in 2002.
Rock Wool Manufacturing, an asbestos insulating cement manufacturer, used asbestos in its products as a bonding agent. Workers handling the cement and other workers nearby were exposed to the toxic fibers. As a result, the company hurt a lot of workers and faced nearly 150,000 lawsuits from workers and their families.

Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of malignant cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. The most common forms of mesothelioma are: pleural and peritoneal. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the abdominal cavity.
Victims with pleural mesothelioma may have respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Victims with peritoneal mesothelioma may have abdominal swelling, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.
The latency period for mesothelioma is very long. The average latency period is about 30 years, but can be shorter than 15 years or longer than 40 years. This means individuals with mesothelioma may take decades to present symptoms from the time they were exposed to asbestos.
What is asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by asbestos exposure. When asbestos is inhaled the fibers irritate and scar the lining of the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. The lungs become stiff and cannot expand and contract normally. Symptoms of asbestosis are shortness of breath, chest pain, and a dry, persistent cough. Like mesothelioma, the latency period for asbestosis is very long. Symptoms may not present for 10 to 40 years after asbestos exposure.
Military Asbestos Exposure
