Chrysler Nerve Center Defect Lawsuit

When we buy a car, we hope it drives well, that it keeps us and our loved ones safe and that it was a good investment. If you recently bought a Chrysler, well… those top three hopes may be wrecked.

Here’s what you need to know: Some Chrysler drivers say that their car is “possessed,” suddenly doing things completely out of nowhere, even when the key fob is not in the ignition.

Now we’d like to remind you that this is not a joke! According to consumer reports, some Chrysler drivers are experiencing issues like this:

Windshield wipers running; windows rolling down or up on their own; radios or blower motors turning on; horns honking; sudden loss of electricity; inability to turn vehicle off; airbags not deploying; loss of control of turn signals; loss of security or ignition systems; inability to shut off fuel pump; loss of headlights or taillights; unintended acceleration; sudden stalling of vehicle. Some drivers are even experiencing a failure to start their car… even if the radio was blaring and the horns honking while the key fob was not in the ignition and the car was completely (or should have been, at least) turned off!

All of this, and yet you didn’t do anything to create these actions. You didn’t push any buttons.

In essence, you’ve lost control of your car and it could happen when your car is parked in an empty parking lot or when you’re cruising down the highway at 70 mph, on a busy intersection or off-ramp. Some drivers report being stranded in the middle of the freeway with a car that suddenly lost its power, again, out of nowhere.

Some drivers took their car to the dealership or had their car towed only to hear from the dealership that they did not know what was wrong. But the Center for Auto Safety says it knows what is wrong: You can blame the “Totally Integrated Power Module,” or TIPM. The TIPM defect may potentially involve millions of Chrysler cars and could cost consumers up to $25,000 to repair.

The TIPM part essentially controls all of the vehicle’s functions… so when there is a defect in the TIPM, the opportunities for something to go wrong are huge. In fact, Chrysler has submitted at least 20 death claims due to problems potentially related to the defective part.

The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) thinks that the problem has to do with a defect in the “Totally Integrated Power Model,” or TIPM.

The Totally Integrated Power Model is a key part of a vehicle’s electronic “nerve center” and if it malfunctions, serious problems may occur — problems ranging from vehicle shutdowns to airbag non-deployment, unintended acceleration or fires. These problems may occur as the Totally Integrated Power Model is in charge of distributing electrical power within the vehicle — it’s one part fuse box and another part brain.

Executive director of the Center for Auto Safety has said that “Owners are really riding at risk” when it comes to this defective Chrysler part.

What’s more, this Chrysler defect may cause other damage to the car. Some drivers have experienced a burned fuel pump or ruined starter as a result of ongoing problems with their Totally Integrated Power Model. All of these parts have to be replaced and repaired… just like the Totally Integrated Power Model itself.

Unfortunately, replacing the Chrysler defect part does not come cheap. Drivers are hearing different estimates depending on their warranty, which dealership they use and just how quickly the dealership recognizes the true problem (— instead of replacing lots of different parts before finally seeing, and fixing, the real TIPM defect).

The silver lining is that many dealerships are starting to recognize the TIPM defect sooner once drivers come to the dealership complaining of freak problems with the car. However, because of how many cars may be involved, TIPM replacement parts are becoming increasingly hard to come by… in fact, some news outlets have reported that they are on national backorder!

All this while Chrysler has remained relatively quiet on the matter. And the drivers who trusted their Chrysler car, and paid a high price for them to begin with, now have to find a way to pay for the problem that they had absolutely no part in causing.

Because of the nature of the TIPM part — and how the part is the nerve center for the entire car and controls how the car uses its electrical power… the problems that may be related to the Chrysler defect are diverse and varied. You may not have experienced all of these problems but, typically, drivers suffering from the Chrysler TIPM defect have experienced several of these related problems.

What’s more, even though there has not been a wide-scale Chrysler recall for all cars with the defective TIPM part, Chrysler HAS submitted at least 20 death claims relating to components of the TIPM part.

Instead of performing a recall, Chrysler has kept largely quiet — though they have said that they are actively investigating customer complaints and looking at components from the field for analysis (— yeah, we’d hope so!).

In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received a petition to investigate this problem. The petition was written by a nonprofit group called the Center for Auto Safety and cited up to 100 similar complaints related to the TIPM. And on CarComplaints.com… the Chrysler TIPM defect is the most reported issue this year!
