The Tragic Details
The 49-year-old victim was a passenger in the truck, which collided with a tractor-trailer. While details of the accident were extremely sketchy, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the man died due to extensive injuries to his chest, leg and pelvis. Investigators were still looking into the cause of the crash.
Why Box Truck Accidents Occur So Often
You see box trucks just about every day. These vehicles, also known as “box vans” or “cube trucks,” are typically anywhere from 12,500-33,000 pounds. They are usually used to transport items such as furniture, office equipment and the like and typically feature a roll-up door.
Box trucks are more prone to rollover accidents due to a shift in their load. This can occur due to improper loading of the items being transported or the failure of safety equipment designed to hold items in place.
However, many accidents involving the vehicles occur due to unrealistic deadline expectations. Box trucks often deliver furniture and other items, and drivers are under a great deal of pressure. As a result, they will sometimes feel the need to drive too fast, or to drive for dangerously long periods of time. Fatigue can be a major factor in box truck accidents as well.
This danger is magnified when a box truck is travelling on a congested city street or highway. Since these vehicles are typically much larger than passenger cars, any type of accident can have devastating consequences.
