The Risk of an IVC Filter Breaking Apart
One of the main reasons doctors choose to leave a filter inside a patient is that the device could easily break apart, or fracture. If this happens, a piece of the filter could travel through the body and pierce a major organ such as the liver or heart. Many people have suffered devastating results from this complication – including death. In some instances, a piece of a filter has impaled an organ and doctors have decided it would be too dangerous to try and remove it.
Patients Not Aware of Risks
Patients do not want to live the rest of their lives with a piece of metal sticking out of a major organ. Unfortunately, this horrible scenario is a reality for far too many people who had no idea they were facing such a risk.
Plaintiffs across the country are involved in lawsuits against defective IVC manufacturers. These manufacturers, plaintiffs claim, failed to warn doctors and surgeons of the potential dangers associated with the device. As a result, plaintiffs are trying to hold those companies accountable for their negligence.
