Deborah Howard of Gastonia, NC is facing major surgery to remove the piece of metal that has caused severe problems. On March 12, a fundraiser was held at a local church to help pay for the massive medical expenses she will face. The event included a dinner as well as a concert featuring several area artists.
What is an IVC Filter?
Howard’s case is a prime example of what can happen when an IVC filter malfunction occurs. This spider-like device is usually implanted in the inferior vena cava (the largest vein in the body) near the groin in order to protect a patient from a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lungs.
The device is designed to break up any blood clots forming in the legs before they can reach other areas of the body. It is intended for patients who are unable to take blood thinners, either because they have an adverse reaction to the medication or have had a recent surgery or trauma.
However, in many instances, a piece of the filter can break off and travel through the body. There have been many reports of patients suffering perforated vessels and organs as a result.
