The FDA recently warned healthcare providers and patients that use of the drugs can lead to severe side effects, including damage to muscles, joints, tendons and more. The agency stated that these side effects outweigh the benefits for people suffering from rather minor issues such as bronchitis or sinus infections.
The problem is that many doctors may not be aware of the new warnings.
Dr. Charles Bennett of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy proposes that fluoroquinolone makers send a letter to every doctor in the U.S. to make sure they are aware of the FDA recommendations. A Charlotte television station reported Dr. Bennett has been warning of the dangers of fluoroquinolones for two years.
Take the Time to Make Sure
You have no doubt read a blog or web page at one time or another that advised you to not be afraid to ask questions of your doctor whenever you are receiving any type of treatment. But for most of us, our eyes tend to glaze over when we go to the doctor’s office. We tend to simply nod and say, “OK” when the doctor recommends a treatment plan.
But when it comes to fluoroquinolones, you have to remember to speak up.
