What is Testosterone Therapy?

December 8, 2017  |  Dangerous Drugs & Devices, Pharmaceuticals

Testosterone therapy, commonly referred to as “Low-T” therapy, has been marketed as a miracle cure that can stop the fatigue and lack of libido that come with aging. However, thousands of men across the country have filed testosterone therapy lawsuits, alleging that the makers of Low-T products failed to let them know of the risk of potentially severe side effects. Here’s a look at what this therapy entails, as well as information on some of the dangers.

How it Works

Testosterone therapy is designed to treat a condition known as hypogonadism. This occurs when a man’s body is no longer able to produce sufficient amounts of testosterone, the male sex hormone. This lack of production is usually due to some sort of issue with either the pituitary gland or the testicles.

When a man has central hypogonadism, that is because the pituitary gland and another part of the brain known as the hypothalamus are not functioning properly. As a result, they are unable to send signals to the testicles to produce testosterone. This can be due to a tumor, a genetic issue, use of steroids or one of many other reasons.

Another form of hypogonadism, primary male hypogonadism, occurs when the testicles themselves are unable to function correctly. This could be due to radiation treatment, kidney or liver disease, or an infection.

Symptoms of primary as well as central hypogonadism include impotence, weakness and fatigue, a loss of sex drive and brittle bones, or osteoporosis.

The Risky “Solution”

Low-T products come in many different varieties. Some come in pill form, while others come in medicated patches. There are also skin gels. All of these products are designed to replenish the body’s supply of testosterone so that the user once again feels strong and vital. Some Low-T products are “bioidentical.” That simply means they are chemically similar to natural testosterone. While they are man-made, they are designed to be as close to the natural hormone as possible. Synthetic testosterone products have a completely different chemical structure than natural testosterone.

Unfortunately, many users of Low-T products – whether they are bioidentical or synthetic – have suffered severe health problems after taking them. These problems include heart attack, blood clots and stroke.
