Veranda Rehab & Healthcare in Harlingen Hurting its Residents: Who is Next?
The Veranda Rehab & Healthcare on S Expressway 83 has been given the lowest Medicare rating — a total of one star out of five. In addition, the facility had 23 health deficiencies in 2015.
After all, according to HealthGrove+, Veranda Rehab & Healthcare is the sixth highest ranked center in Harlingen. That may sound good on paper — until you consider that there are five other, higher ranked facilities in the area, and until you consider even more worrisome facts like:
- A number of long-stay residents at Veranda Rehabilitation and Healthcare were put on antipsychotic medication. In our firm’s work on behalf of individuals hurt by the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, we’ve found that some elderly patients may be put on antipsychotics in order to restrain them. In fact, we call them “chemical restraints,” and it may cause serious, needless suffering as well as a muted life experience.
- The Veranda Rehab & Healthcare failed to write and use necessary policies that forbid the mistreatment, abuse or neglect of its residents.
- The facility failed to clear their facilities’ area from risks and accident hazards — and then, in turn, also failed to provide the necessary supervision to prevent these avoidable accidents due to their facilities’ accident hazards.
When we admit an elderly loved one into a nursing home, there are a variety of thoughts and questions that may arise. There’s the, “Is this the right thing to do?“ The, “Is it the right time?“ Or the, “Am I too early —am I too late?“
Unfortunately, one thing we all too often fail to consider is the quality of care provided by the nursing home itself. So often, we assume that the nursing home we’re thinking of paying mightily for will simply offer the care they say they do, the kind of care they highlight on their own website and marketing materials, the little flyers you see before you sign on the dotted line.
Veranda Rehab & Healthcare’s very own website boasts that they are, “committed to making the care you’ll receive, and the fresh, clean feeling you’ll experience when you come inside, reassure you that this is someplace special. We’ll do our best to make sure you feel that way, every day of your stay.”
Nowhere on the site do they mention Medicare.gov’s Nursing Home Compare one star out of five.
If someone you know is at Veranda Rehab & Healthcare, we urge you to stay on top of their care and know the level of care they are receiving today.
It might not hurt to go ahead and learn about all of the top signs of nursing home abuse too. After all, the facilities’ very own staff may not be receiving the training to understand what constitutes abuse and what doesn’t. It just may well be your job to help the center get their act together, and to truly protect the residents like it says it will.
