The Potential Dangers of Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid

Nexium Dangers

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are over-the-counter and prescribed heartburn medications. The brand names Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid, are among the most popular of these symptom-relieving medications. They make it easier to swallow, easier to breathe, and provide comfort and relief.

Recently, a growing number of these medication users are filing lawsuits claiming regular use of these drugs led to an increased risk of kidney malfunction, stomach infections, chronic kidney disease, and stroke. These plaintiffs maintain that by not using warning labels, they took information and choices regarding the use of these drugs out of the hands of consumers. These consumers then unknowingly impacted to their health in negative ways. The claim is that pharmaceutical companies placed profits ahead of consumer safety.

By suppressing the production of stomach acid, making some people more vulnerable to gastrointestinal infections, these drugs are doing harm to the way kidneys function and the way the body absorbs and releases vital minerals and nutrients. Researchers believe the manner in which these drugs suppress stomach acids alter the balance of good and bad bacteria making some consumers more prone to infections and other diseases.

Have you used these medications to treat heartburn or acid reflux and experienced any of the following symptoms?

  • nausea or vomiting
  • difficulty breathing
  • sudden weight loss
  • chest pain
  • dry, itchy skin
  • headaches
  • frequent hiccups
  • insomnia
  • muscle cramps

Because they do provide relief from the terrible pain of heartburn, patients find them easy to rely upon leading to their frequent overuse. PPIs have recently been linked to kidney disease, heart disease, Vitamin B12 deficiency, and dementia.
