RoundUp Weedkiller Causes Cancer Concern
RoundUp is a popular weedkiller found in the aisles of most hardware stores. It is applied everywhere from the backyard, to the Little League field, to the biggest farms in California. The use of RoundUp as an herbicide in agriculture has increased dramatically over the past several decades. More than 10 million pounds of the chemical are used in California alone each year.
The explosion in use of RoundUp doesn’t come without concern. Glyphosate, one of its active ingredients, could potentially cause cancer. According to the New York Times, California’s environmental health agency will now list glyphosate as a known carcinogen.
California school districts in Burbank, Glendale, and Irvine have already eliminated their use of glyphosate. An official warning from the state’s environmental experts could help to further discourage the widespread use of this potentially harmful chemical.
Monsanto, the product manufacturer, maintains that glyphosate doesn’t cause cancer, but the growing body of scientific evidence suggests otherwise. A 2015 study published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the research arm of the World Health Organization, found that glyphosate is an endocrine disrupter and probable carcinogen.
The WHO also reported that glyphosate, found in Monsanto’s RoundUp, could cause an array of other serious issues in humans and animals, including genetic and reproductive defects.
By contrast, “independent studies” that promoted glyphosate exposure as safe for consumers were later shown to be funded or sponsored by the pesticide industry. As it turns out, Monsanto may have been working to cover up the possible dangers of glyphosate for decades.
