The Risks of Onglyza and What You Can Do If You are Harmed
If you have type-2 diabetes, you are no doubt already dealing with a great deal of stress. The last thing you need is to have the medication you are taking put you at risk for suffering even further.
However, the unfortunate truth is that if you are taking Onglyza to help control your blood sugar levels, you could be susceptible to many serious conditions. If you have been harmed after using the drug, the pharmaceutical attorneys with Baron & Budd may be able to help.
What’s the Issue?
Onglyza, which is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, has been associated with pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, and heart failure and many other complications. Several studies have shown Onglyza use could lead to severe health problems.
For example, in 2013 the medical journal Diabetes published a study linking Onglyza with an increased risk of the development of pancreatic cancer. According to the study, people who took Onglyza developed pre-cancerous cells in the pancreas, as well as small tumors (adenomas) that can turn malignant in some instances. The development of pre-cancerous cells is extremely alarming as most cases of pancreatic cancer are not diagnosed until the late stages when it is very difficult to treat. This is a very serious – sometimes even fatal – condition.
In addition to the studies showing a link between pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer to Onglyza, in April 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which approved Onglyza for use in 2009, voted to require that the drug’s warning label indicate a possible heightened risk of heart failure. This requirement came after review of a study involving 16,000 participants.
