Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec, Others Linked to Kidney Disease and Kidney Failure

DALLAS (May 6, 2016) – The national law firm of Baron & Budd is now accepting cases from clients who have suffered health complications after taking proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medications such as Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium and others. These medications have been linked to serious health complications involving the kidneys, including kidney disease and complete failure of the organ.

A recent CNN article highlighted several studies that have associated highly popular PPI medications with kidney problems. On April 14, 2016, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published a study showing that people taking PPIs are at a heightened risk for kidney complications.

CNN cited another study that analyzed the health records of nearly 175,000 people who took PPIs, comparing that data with the records of more than 20,000 other patients who took an alternative medicine known as histamine H2 blockers. According to the article, the patients who took PPIs were at a 96 percent higher risk of developing kidney failure than the patients taking histamine H2 blockers, and a 28 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

PPIs are among the most-prescribed medications, according to CNN. Approximately 15 million Americans have prescriptions for the drugs, but the number of people using them is likely significantly higher because many of these medicines are available without a prescription.

Several PPIs are on the market in addition to Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium. These include:

  • Aciphex
  • Dexilant
  • Kapidex
  • Protonix
  • Zegerid (available both over-the-counter and through a prescription)

“If patients had been properly warned about the alleged dangers of these drugs, they would have been able to explore other alternatives that carry less risk,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of the national law firm of Baron & Budd. “We will always fight passionately on behalf of those who were harmed by medications that were supposed to help them, not hurt them.”
