Effectiveness of Pennsylvania Nursing Home Inspections Questioned

A Harrisburg, PA television station conducted an investigation into the effectiveness of nursing home inspections in Pennsylvania. The station found that there are several ways for a facility to game the system and avoid penalties for filthy conditions – even though the inspections are supposed to be unannounced.

Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy says there are two types of inspections: the required annual survey and surveys in response to complaints. Both kinds of inspections are supposed to be unannounced. However, there are claims some nursing homes found a way around that.
