Comments Pour in After NJ News Story on Fluoroquinolones
A New Jersey television station recently aired a story on a U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning on fluoroquinolones, prompting a flurry of comments to the station’s Facebook page. People shared their stories of crippling problems they experienced after taking these powerful antibiotics.
Investigation Spurs Immediate Reactions
The News 12 New Jersey story aired on May 18, shortly after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned doctors and patients of the increased risk of muscle, tendon and ligament damage. In addition, the FDA stated that the risk of fluoroquinolone side effects outweigh the benefits of the drugs for people suffering from relatively minor issues such as bronchitis, sinus infections and the like.
The station also reported that the FDA might have known about these side effects well before it issued the warning.
As you may expect, this stimulated a great deal of conversation among people who have been harmed by Avelox, Cipro, Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones.
One person said she took a fluoroquinolone and thought she was fine until a “bomb exploded” inside her body. She said her health was destroyed in the process, comparing fluoroquinolones to playing Russian roulette. Another commenter was a former ER nurse who dealt with disabling side effects after taking the drug. Before she became disabled, she said, the only adverse effect of fluoroquinolones she was aware of was a slight risk of Achilles’ tendon issues.
Others reported nerve and damage affecting nearly every part of their body, repeated Achilles’ tendon ruptures and more.
There is a way that people who suffered harm after taking fluoroquinolones can hold the manufacturers of these drugs responsible – by filing a lawsuit.
