Glyphosate’s Reach Now Extends to Pet Food

Recently, researchers found that a probable carcinogen known as glyphosate was found in many different breakfast cereals. Now researchers have discovered the same chemical in nearly 20 brands of pet food. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, a weed killer manufactured by Monsanto and now Bayer.

The Findings

Cornell University researchers analyzed 18 brands of dog and cat food and found traces of the chemical in all of them. While they were unsure as to the exact reason why glyphosate was in the pet food samples, they believe it came from some sort of plant material. The level of glyphosate in the pet food was lower than the amount previously found in many breakfast foods. However, it is unclear what sort of affect the chemical may have on pets – regardless of the level.

Why Glyphosate is Dangerous

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) labeled glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen” in 2015. Previously, the Environmental Working Group found that many breakfast foods, including popular brands such as Lucky Charms and Cheerios. According to the EWG, the cereals had levels of glyphosate that were unsafe for children to consume. In addition, exposure to Glyphosate has been linked to the development of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer.
