Beware Powerful FLQ Drugs if You Have a Cold
This is the time of year that a cold is always a risk. Whether you’re at the office, the mall or your favorite restaurant, catching someone else’s illness is a distinct possibility. If your cold is so severe you need to see a doctor, however, think twice if you receive a prescription for a powerful fluoroquinolone (FLQ) antibiotic such as Avelox or Levaquin. You may find that the risks of these drugs greatly outweigh the benefits.
Why These Drugs are Dangerous
FLQ antibiotics are commonly prescribed for problems such as sinusitis, colds or other routine infections. However, FLQ drugs are extremely powerful, and should only be prescribed for far more serious diseases. The reason is that they carry a risk for several different health complications, including ruptured tendons, peripheral neuropathy and many others.
Unless you already knew of the dangers of FLQ medications, you may not have any idea to question your doctor if he or she prescribes one of these drugs. That is why it is so important that you are as informed as possible before you visit a medical professional. If you are not, you may find that it simply was not worth it to take an FLQ drug for something that may have run its course in a week or so.
