East Texas Nursing Home Abuse Investigation Uncovers Extremely Troubling Results
Tyler television station KYTX recently aired a report on an investigation into nursing home abuse at facilities in the Tyler and Longview areas. What they found isn’t necessarily surprising to those of us who already know how pervasive this problem is across the country. However, it is always a shock to see just how bad conditions can get.
Neglect and More
The investigation showed that several homes in East Texas have received citations for a wide range of abusive incidents, including negligence, malnourishment and more. The television station found that five homes in Tyler and Longview scored less than 45 on a 100-point scale, according to the Department of Aging and Disabilities Services.
At one facility, according to the station, nurses did not make sure that an injured resident wore a sling – as ordered by a doctor – after an accident. At another home, nurses failed to properly clean residents before changing their catheters, exposing them to an increased risk of developing urinary tract infections.
Do Your Homework
One of the best ways to help prevent this problem from affecting an elderly loved one in a nursing home is to visit often to make sure he or she is safe. Find out if the home is staffed properly so your loved one will get the attention he or she needs. If you suspect any sort of abuse is occurring, call the Texas Elder Abuse Hotline at (800) 252-5400. However, if you have any reason to suspect your loved one is in immediate danger, call the police.
