100 Days of Oil

As of Wednesday, July 28, 2010, it has been 100 days since the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, setting off the worst oil spill in U.S. history. To date, the well has spilled between 2.31 million and 4.1 million barrels of oil based on government estimates.

The gushing wellhead was capped July 15, but the BP and government officials warned that disaster won’t be over until BP completes relief wells next month.

FDA expands black box warning of rheumatoid arthritis drug Arava

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded the black box warning on the label of rheumatoid arthritis drug Arava to warn of potentially fatal liver damage.  The FDA received 49 reports of Arava-related liver injury, including 14 deaths, between August 2002 and May 2009.  The adverse events occurred in patients with both short- and long-term use of the drug, with most suffering injury within six to 12 months of treatment.

Hundreds in Louisiana attribute health problems to gulf oil spill

According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, 324 patients visiting doctors and emergency rooms in the state have attributed their health complaints to either oil or dispersants from the gulf oil spill.

The majority of those who reported oil spill-related health problems worked offshore or in spill cleanup.  The rest—about one-fourth of the total—were members of the general public.

Complaints attributed to the spill included dizziness, headaches, nausea, throat irritation, fatigue, and weakness.

FDA halts enrollments in Avandia clinical trial, orders drug maker to warn of heart risks

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline–the maker of the diabetes drug Avandia–to stop enrolling patients in a clinical trial comparing the drug with other diabetes medications.  The agency also ordered Glaxo to inform current participants in the clinical trial that the drug may increase the risk of heart disease.
