CPSC bans drop-side cribs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has voted unanimously to ban drop-side cribs in the U.S.  The move comes after 153 deaths of infants in the past four years have been attributed to the cribs.  Sixty-five of the deaths were due to suffocation caused when the hardware failed and the dropside detached, trapping, the child’s neck.

The drop-side crib ban is the agency’s first major overhaul of regulations governing infant beds in nearly three decades.

FDA investigating cancer risks of blood pressure medication

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a possible link between some of the most widely prescribed blood pressure medications and an increased risk of cancer.

A recent study that analyzed data from a number of long-term clinical trials found a slightly higher rate of new cancers among patients who used blood pressure drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers.  As a result, the FDA has begun a review of the drug class, which includes such popularly-prescribed medications as Cozaar, Avapro, Atacand, Benicar, Diovan, Micardis, and Teveten.
