BPA used in canned food poses risks for children, fetuses

May232010

A report by the National Workgroup for Safe Markets urges pregnant women to limit their intake of canned food and drinks, after finding that 92% of food from metal cans is contaminated with bisphenol A (BPA).

An estrogen-like chemical, BPA is used in a wide range of products.  The National Toxicology Program has stated “some concern” that BPA can affect brain development, behavior, and prostate gland heath in children, both before and after birth.

The study by the National Workgroup for Safe Markets—a coalition of 19 environmental groups—found that levels of BPA can vary widely, even between cans of the same product.  The group is asking Congress to ban BPA in food and drink containers.  Some countries and states already restrict the use of BPA in children’s products, and some food companies are starting to use BPA-free cans.
