Benzene is used in the manufacture of a variety of products, including resins, polymers, and plastics such as Styrofoam and in the production of synthetic fibers, such as nylon. Benzene is also found in some other chemical-based products, including lubricants, dyes, detergents, and pesticides. Butadiene, an intermediate in the oxidation of benzene and other fuel components, is used in styrene-butadiene copolymer production as well as in the production of synthetic elastomers.
Trades that perform maintenance around the pipes and holding locations during “shut downs” and “turn-arounds,” including operators, maintenance workers, labors, pipefitters, electricians, and welders, risk benzene exposure. Warehousemen and other trades that work in shipping and receiving also risk exposure to benzene containing products.
The plastics industry uses substantial quantities of benzene during the manufacturing process. Benzene is an additive utilized during the production of plastic, resin, and polymer products.
