Zicam cold remedy nasal spray recalled due to loss of sense of smell

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on June 16, 2009, warned consumers to stop using the nasal spray Zicam, after it was reported that 130 people have lost their sense of smell after using the over-the-counter nasal spray. The agency also warned the company's manufacturer, Matrixx, to stop selling Zicam zinc products administered zia the nose.

The FDA warning applies to

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs Kids Size

FDA inspectors had visited Matrixx in May of this year and drew attention to 800 reported complaints that Matrixx had not given to the agency, despite a law passed in 2007 that requires mandatory reporting of complaints about certain products.

In some reported cases, some users experienced some loss of their sense of smell ("amnosia") after a single use of the products. In other cases, the loss of sense of smell occurred after several uses. The condition may be permanent.
